The Effect of Safety Accident Stress on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Childcare Teachers

Abstract
The present study aims (1) to develop the Safety Accident Stress Checklist for Child Care Teachers (SACS) to measure the safety accident stress of a child care teacher, (2) to verify the effects of safety accident stress on post-traumatic stress disorder and (3) to examine a psychological mechanism by which safety accident stress influence PTSD in childcare teachers. For this, study 1 firstly developed the SASC and verified the psychometric properties of SASC. The SACS and Life Event Questionnaire(LEQ) were administered to 114 child care teachers in the Gyeonggi Province daycare center to examine the psychometric properties of the SACS. The results in study 1 showed relatively high internal consistency, and adequate test-retest reliability over a 2 or 3 week period. In addition, the SASC was found to have appropriate construct validity in that it showed a significantly high degree of agreement with the LEQ. Secondly, the study 2 administered SASC, Post-Traumatic Diagnostic Scale(PDS), and Post Traumatic Cognition Inventory(PTCI) to 461 childcare teachers. The results of the analysis using SPSS 18.0 and Hayes¡¯ Process Procedure 4 models are as follows. Even after controlling the demographic and job characteristics of daycare teachers, the stress of daycare teachers¡¯ safety accidents was found to predict the symptoms of post traumatic stress. Finally, it was confirmed that the relationship between safety accident stress and the PTSD was mediated by the post-traumatic cognition. Based on these results, we discussed the implications of this study and the suggestions for future research.
